Glan Y Gors Track Guide

Fast footage

GYG is one of the biggest and best karting tracks in the country in my opinion. The scenery alone is enough for this but the track has a lot to say for itself as well, and navigating it is not an easy affair. This track guide takes you through both dry and wet laps (it is Wales after all) and some of the do's and don'ts for mastering this ribbon of Karting perfection in the North Welsh hills.

Date: April, 2019
Conditions: Dry
Type of video: Voice over race footage

Driver notes

Preferred overtaking spots:
Overtaking is actually very difficult here, there are only really a handful of opportunities. Spoon curve at the top of the hill is the best in the Dry, as is the switch back down the hill into the Carousel. Take the correct line through the Devils Elbow, and you can set up a great move into the final corner in the Wet.

Pro tips
Compression Corner, the fast right hander just before you enter the Devil's elbow, can be taken flat, you just need to learn to live with the slide. Brake early into the Devils elbow to give yourself a wider entry line through the Esses. In the Wet, braking for spoon should happen on the inside and can be as late as in the dry too.

Kart review:
The kart used here are Club 100 2 Stroke Rotax Max. These Karts are technically rental karts, but don’t let that fool you, these are some of the best Karts available for mere mortals to drive. The power is one thing, the cornering and braking though is where these karts come into their own. Not every Kart is the same, some are better than others, but when you get that better one and it does everything you want it to merely by thought, you are truly experiencing one of the great Karting moments!

Value for money:
Club100 is a great experience, one that I truly truly love! It offers mere mortals the chance to feel like full on racing drivers with the power and handling the karts provide, so much more than any other rental kart can offer. However, it is not a cheap hobby and, with inflation, heading off to do these races is becoming more and more difficult from a financial perspective. Overall though, I would say it is value for money, just don't get bogged down when it does come out.

Inside track

GYG is my favourite UK track, not just for the track itself, but for everything else that comes with it. The location in the rolling hills of North Wales is amazing, from a certain vista on a clear day you can see Mount Snowdon, it is amazing! The little cafe at the bottom though is also such a vibe, with great food to boot. Staff are very friendly, unless you ask them for that Wifi, given North Wales signal it is hoarded like gold. Last time I was there in 2022 they were building new toilets, so when I return in 2024 it will be interesting to see what they've done.
